Literacy is super-important to me. I want my books to make kids love learning and exploring the world around them from the comfort of a good book.
I sketch out all the characters, places, and settings. I make little bios of each character, and use them to guide how the story unfolds. This way each character has their own unique personality.
For settings I look at outdoor photos of places around the world until I get the 'feel' that I like.
I use an iPad to sketch out characters and scenes. Sometimes I'll use real objects as references. I always draw pictures extra-large and then scale them down when I add them to the story book.
The words are simple enough for young children to understand with plenty new words for them to learn as they read.
